Recertification with the National Registry of EMT's
Many EMS professionals choose to maintain their status with the National Registry. Some enjoy the ability to move from state to state by utilizing one of the NREMT's main benefits of reciprocity. Others need to maintain their certification as a condition of employment. No matter why you have decided to keep your NREMT certification, one fact will remain, recertification comes every two years.
Recertification Requirements
Each level of EMS personnel will have different recertification requirements. It is not good enough to just take various continuing education courses. Each CEU class must fit into a specific category, the National Component, the State / Local Component, and the Individual Component. Each of these components have different requirements and we will go into further detail below for the EMT, AEMT and Paramedic.
Recertification Methods
There are two (2) ways to recertify with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. First, individuals can recertify by examination. Those that elect to recertify utilizing this method will NOT have to provide evidence of continuing education to the National Registry. To utilize this method, registered EMS personnel must log into their NREMT account and complete the Recertification by Exam Application. Afterwards, you will need to pay the recertification by exam fees and follow any additional instructions as communicated by the National Registry. Please understand that the NREMT will allow you to recertify by exam, however it is vitally important for you to ensure that your State Office of EMS will accept this method of recertification. Some states will have a minimum set of continuing education that each EMT must complete in order to renew licensure to practice.
The second and most common method of recertification is through continuing education. To ensure a minimum level of competency, the National Registry of EMT's has adopted the National Continued Competency Program ( NCCP ).
The second and most common method of National Registry recertification is through continuing education. To ensure a minimum level of competency, the National Registry of EMT's has adopted the National Continued Competency Program ( NCCP ). The NCCP model provides a set of continuing education requirements for each level of EMS professionals. The framework is setup in three sections, the National Component, a Local / State component and the Individual Component.
